MaxFightsDM - The Aftermath

MaxFightsDM put on another great night of fights with one bout in particular that was one of the best fights in recent memory pitting Tim Gorman and Jared Downing together in one of the best MMA wars I may have seen in quite some time.  Ted Worthington and Rob Roy also put on a great display in the final 5 round championship bout of the night.  Additionally, Team Destruction out of Pilot Knob, Missouri came to Des Moines with 3 fighters and left with 3 wins as they started the night of fights off in dramatic fashion with all three winning by TKO.  Results are as follows:

Bout 1

Alex White
5' 11"   155 lbs.
Age: 21
3-0 Record
Fight Style: Boxing/BJJ
Team Destruction/ Pilot Knob, MO

        vs.

Brody Jay
5' 11"    155 lb.
Age: 18
0-1 Fight Record
Fighting Style: Banger
Henry's MMA- Creston, IA

Round 1:  Alex and Brody exchange a few punches and White quickly gains the upper hand in this area with superior striking and seems to be timing his punches.  He brings Jay to the ground after multiple strikes to the head and now in a kneeling position up against the fence, White pounces and lands multiple more hard strikes to the head of Jay causing the ref to step in and bring a halt to the action early in Round 1.  Winner White by TKO/RSC.

Bout 2

Mike Zaricor
5' 8"   155 lbs.
Age: 21
10-1 Record
Fight Style: Wrestler
Team Destruction, Pilot Knob, MO

     vs.

Josh Booyah
5' 11"    155 lb.
3-2 Fight Record
Fight Style: Stand Up
Real Warriors Fight Team

Round 1:  Mike gets a fast takedown and lands into side mount and continues to jockey for better position.  Mike gets a crucifix and begins raining down punches and elbows on Josh.  Scrambling to the opposite side mount position, Mike continues to batter Josh with his Ground and Pound.  Now gaining a full mount, Mike works to maintain a solid mount as Josh attempts to scramble.  Mike continues his assault at an even more furious pace from the mount and the ref moves in to stop the contest as Josh also begins to tapout due to the overwhelming onslaught of strikes from Zaricor.  Winner Mike Zaricor via TKO/Strikes.

Bout 3

Eric Irvin
5' 8"  185 lb
Age: 23
9-1 Record
Fight Style: Wrestler/Ground and Pound
Team Destruction, Pilot Knob, MO

     vs.

Miguel Alderette
5' 9"    185 lb.
4-2 Fight Record
Fight Style: Striker/wrestler
Warrior Doo- Sioux City

Round 1:  The final fighter in the triology brought up to Des Moines from Team Destruction in Pilot Knob, Missouri, Eric Irvin comes out swinging hard on a very game Miguel Aderette.  A hard right langed by Miguel doesn't phase Irvin who lands hard knees to Miguel's body backing him off.  Irvin gets the takedown and begins to Ground and Pound Miguel from the guard.  Miguel tries to roll out to avoid the strikes but Irvin moves quickly to take his back and attempts the rear naked choke which Miguel fights off.  This series of events continues 3 more times as Irvin continuously regains back position and begins pounding Miguel to loosen him up for the RNC, but each time, Miguel fights off the choke attempt as the round comes to an end.
MFF Scoring:  10-9 Irvin

Round 2:  A kick by Miguel is caught by Irvin who immediately takes him down.  Now in side mount, Miguel tries hard to scramble out but Irvin keeps him pinned hard to the mat.  As Irvin begins to strike again, Miguel scrambles and rolls and Irvin takes the back momentarily before Miguel escapes and the two stand.  After several hard strikes by both fighters, Irvin slams him to ground again and begins a viscious Ground and Pound session leading to a crucifix position with Irvin slamming elbows into the face of Miguel.  Although Miguel showed great heart in this bout, the ref steps in to bring a halt to the mugging at 2:25 of round 2.  Winner Eric Irvin, TKO/Strikes.

Bout 4

McKenzie Jackson

    vs.

Ben Crowder
5' 11"    170 lb
4-3 Record
Age: 23
Fight Style: Banger

Round 1:  The first pro fight of the night started with hard wild kicks and strikes by both fights before Jackson begins to find a home to the torso of Crowder which seems to make him wince in pain.  The plainly visible red marks indicate some hard strikes have landed.  Jackson gets a takedown and Crowder is saved by the fence momentarily then a huge slam as both are now pinned up against the fence.  A slow downward spiral leads to Crowder getting Jackson in a triangle from which he cannot escape, tapping to the submission in the first round.  Winner Crowder by Tapout/Triangle.

Bout 5

Brad Floyd
 5' 7"   165 lb
Age: 23
14-7 Record
Fight Style: Banger
Des Moines MMA

     vs.

Andy Selvig
5' 10"      135 lb
Age: 19
5-1 Record
Fight Style: Brazilian Jui Jitsu
Team Crazy, Lake City, MN

Round 1:  Selvig begins by striking hard to Brad Floyd but Brad gets a takedown and although it is fought off hard by Selvig, Brad continues to GNP hard as Selvig looks for submission after submission trying to find a way to win the fight.  After escaping a knee bar and ankle lock attempts, Brad begins slamming home hard shots from the back mount, one of which seems to have split open the nose of Selvig causing Andy to tapout due to strikes.  Winner Floyd by tapout/strikes.

Bout 6

Cory Simpson
5' 11"      165 lb
Age: 23
14-7 Record
Fight Style: Banger
Des Moines MMA

      vs.

Bruce Johnson
5' 10"    165 lb
Age: 26
8-9 Record
Fight Style: Brawler/stand-up fighter
Team Crazy, Lake City, MN

Round 1:  Fireworks show starts with a hard kick by Bruce answered by a hard right from Cory.  Bruce gets a takedown and lands into guard with a scramble up against the cage.  A lack of action causes the ref to stand the fighters as Bruce stands up out of the guard.  Another takedown by Cory leads to both striking each other from the guard. Bruce, now cut over the right eye attempts a triangle and then an armbar which Cory escapes twice only to end up in another triangle attempt.  In what looks like will be a tapout due to a triangle choke, Cory amazingly comes out of it a third time and begins an onslaught of punches that go unanswered, several to the back of the head, and the ref steps in to bring a halt to the action.  Bruce complains about the strikes to the back of the head, but to no avail.  Winner Simpson via RSC/TKO strikes.

Bout 7

Tim Gorman
5' 4"       140 lb
Age: 25
4-1 Record
Fight Style: Muay Thai/wrestler
Des Moines MMA

       vs.

Jared Downing
5' 5"      140 lb
Age: 20
7-0 record
Fight style: Freestyle
Team Hard Drive, Cedar Rapids, IA

All Three Rounds:  Both fighters beat the every living you know what out of each other, and repeat this for Rounds 2 and 3.  This fight was certainly the fight of the night.  Both of these fighters came out swinging hard with Gorman landing his left hook at will against Downing, and Downing landing combination after combination on Gorman.  Overall, Downing landed more punches, kicks, and garnered more takedowns over the length of the 3 round war (but certainly not in an overwhelming fashion as this fight was a close one to call) causing the judges to see it his way for a split decision victory.  This fight, at any given time, could have been ended by either fighter as their skill sets were very well matched for this event.  Striking, wrestling and submission defense and offense by both were outstanding, and both took and gave a beating of a lifetime throughout the fight.  At the end of the third round, for approximately the last 20 seconds, both stood toe to toe center cage and swung wildly for the fences with each landing nearly every punch, and catching every punch, and neither backed down.  This was hands down the fight of the night, and with the win and his performance, Downing also won a $3000 dollar Polanti watch for his efforts.  This may have been fight of the year, and both fighters should be proud of their performance as the entire crowd was on their feet the last half of the 3rd round on going absolutely crazy with the action these two put together.

Bout 8

Emily Klinefelter
5' 3"     130 lb
Age: 25
5-1 Record
Fight Style: Boxer
Icore Boxing and MMA, Iowa City, IA

       vs.

Nataly Jerez
4' 9"    130 lb
Age: 21
18-6-1 Muay Thai record, pro MMA debut
U.S. Army National Guard, Los Angeles, CA

Round 1:  The first female pro fight in 3 years in the State of Iowa brought these two together in the center of the cage with Nataly landing several Muay Thai kicks.  With the long reach advantage, striking Nataly repeatedly with the right hand sends Nataly to the ground as Emily immediately follows.  More hard strikes directly to the face and a headlock leads to Nataly tapping out due to strikes in Round 1.

Bout 9

Victor Moreno
6' 3"   185 lb
Age: 25
30-14 Record
Fight Style: Freestyle/stand-up
Des Moines Jiu Jitsu

      vs.

John Cronk
5' 11"  185 lb
Age: 41
18-21 Record
Fight Style: Kickboxer
Denver, CO

Round 1:  Several hard strikes in Round 1 cause Kronk to meet the canvass, however Moreno wants nothing to do with the ground and keeps allowing Kronk to return to his feet.  Generally, this wasn't for long as Moreno would find more ways to strike and send him to the mat over the length of round 1.  At the end of the round, Moreno lets Kronk find the mat once again, but this time follows him and attempts to strike hard, but Kronk dodges most of the blows.  Kronk does appear dazed at the end of the round.
MMF Scoring:  10-8 Moreno

Round 2:  Both come out reenergized however hard knees by Moreno brings Kronk back down.  Kronk tries multiple times for the Kimura as Moreno takes his back and punches numerous times to Kronk's head while also intermittently giving him knees to the side and lower torso.  Moreno, now seemingly tired of punching and kneeing Kronk from this position, lets him stand briefly only to take him down again and resume pounding out a victory as he moves in for the RNC which he gets in the 2nd round.  Winner Moreno via tapout/RNC.

Bout 10 - MaxFightsDM Lightweight Title Fight

Ted Worthington
6' 1"    155 lb
Age: 25
30-16 Record
Fight Style: Gorilla Warfare

    vs.

Rob Roy
5" 9"    155 lb
Age: 28
16-5 Record
Fight Style: Freestyle
Tapout Super Hero/ Rob Roy Independent, Kenosha, WI

Overall:  This was an outstanding fight as Ted Worthington attempted to submit Roy at least 15 times per round on average.  Worthington had several triangles and armbars in deep on Roy, but the magician kept finding ways to escape the submissions time and time again.  For his part, Roy dominated the takedowns and the ground and pound over the full 5 found fight.  What kept this fight so interesting was the fact that everyone in the crowd, including me, thought it was perhaps just a matter of time before Worthington sunk in a submission that Roy could not escape, however it did not come to fruition for Worthington as he fell to the judge's scoring on all cards losing all 5 rounds due to Roy's takedowns, submission defense, and his tireless ground and pound.  Winner Roy by decision and Roy is crowned the new MaxFightsDM Lightweight Champion.  Even with the loss, Worthington showed an outstanding display of jiu jitsu and one wonders if this fight had gone one more round if Worthington would have finally secured a submission.
